OpenAI moves frontier model training into offline web environments
OpenAI says it now conducts frontier-model training without access to the live internet, using an indexed, cached web environment for browsing practice. It describes a September 20 internal research-model incident involving limited internet access through a DNS misconfiguration, followed by a pause and stronger containment tests before training resumed October 1. This policy concerns internal training and evaluation, not whether ChatGPT can browse for users.
