England expands an AI planning-assessment pilot to 15 councils

The UK government said on October 30 that PlanAssist, developed with Google DeepMind, Google Cloud and Faculty, is expanding from pilots at Camden, Barnet and Dorset to a 12-month beta involving 15 English councils. In early tests, the government and Google report a 58% reduction in officers’ time spent on assessment tasks; that is an early pilot measure, not proof that all permit decisions now take 58% less time. The tool compiles applications and drafts cited assessments, but qualified planning officers review and decide each case. A possible England-wide rollout in 2027 depends on further testing.
