OpenAI describes live internal monitors that can stop unsafe model output

In a November 2 research post, OpenAI says it has deployed activation classifiers as an additional safeguard in its most capable models. The monitors examine model-internal signals while an answer is generated, can interrupt an output and block tool calls pending further review. OpenAI reports stronger robustness than its text classifiers in its own tests, while noting the monitors only detect categories they were trained to recognize and may need retraining as models change. This is an internal safety system, not a user-controlled product feature or proof that all harmful outputs are prevented.
