OpenAI announces a program to make future AI campuses reduce grid demand
OpenAI launched Grid Protectors on November 2 to negotiate demand-response arrangements for future U.S. compute campuses. It says its planned Effingham County, Georgia campus will be a pilot, building on an existing Georgia Power agreement for up to 1,000 megawatts of flexible demand response; the campus is still in development. OpenAI says it will pay the project’s infrastructure and electricity costs. Utility savings and grid benefits are projections, not measured outcomes of an operating campus.
